ARKive’s Most Wanted!
ARKive has already profiled 6,000 of the world’s species on their website, with the help of the world’s best filmmakers, photographers and scientists (including Specialist Stock). These include many of our most charismatic and familiar animals: gorillas, lions, tigers and elephants. In 2010, the International Year of Biodiversity, we have set ourselves the ambitious task of tracking down films and photos of 17,000 of the world’s most endangered plants and animals, including major black millipede, Marley’s golden mole and the Jeweled toad (below).

Crying Face Appears in Glacier
The image of a crying face has appeared briefly in a melting glacier off Norway. ‘Tears’ in the natural sculpture located on the Nordaustlandet ice shelf in the Svalbard archipelago are created by a waterfall of glacial water falling from one of the face’s eyes.

This glacier has been retreating at a rate of 400ft per year steadily since 1920 according to the Norwegian government body. These pictures were taken by a Michael S. Nolan who is a specialist in the marine environment and contributes regularly to our Splashdown collection and lecturers on National Geographic ships on tour.
Specialist Stock, a comprehensive collection of still & footage libraries. Media posted on this blog is Rights Managed Material
